5 Of Our Top Tips and Tricks for A Longer Lasting Boiler

Boiler repairs can be an expensive service to have done and can be a shock, especially if they are required when you least expect! That’s why we have put together a blog of our top tips and tricks for a longer-lasting boiler!

We completely understand that no boiler can last forever however there are simple measures that can be taken to enhance its life expectancy.

Check the Pressure Regularly

Boilers losing pressure over time is expected, however, we recommended that your boiler’s pressure is checked every month to ensure that it’s air free to avoid any nasty surprises.

If the boiler does lose too much pressure, most modern boilers will automatically shut down. A temporary solution when the pressure is low is to open the inlet valves pouring water in, but remember this is only temporary until an engineer is available to come out.

Here at Haven, we pride ourselves on our efficiency. We want to make this promise to you, that we will get an engineer out to you within 24 hours, 365 days of the year if your boiler is on the blink.

Turn the Heating on Every so often in the Summer

In a number of peoples case, they don’t need to use their boiler during the summer months. Turning it on however, for 15-20 mins every so often in the hotter seasons could help to expand its life. A boiler being turned off the majority of summer could be why your boiler is having issues much earlier than anticipated.

Turning it on for 15-20 minutes every so often in the summer months averts the boiler from seizing up through the lack of use.

It only needs to be switched on every few weeks meaning that it doesn’t take up too much time and could potentially save you a large portion of money the next time you go to use it in the winter months.

Annual Check-Ups

Continuously postponing your annual check-ups could only be causing you more stress in the future when your boiler breaks unexpectedly. It is advised to have your boiler serviced in August or September, prior to when you are going to rely on your boiler regularly during the winter months.

Annual services after the summer months when your boiler has been off, is the perfect chance to get it professionally looked at to ensure that it is working at its full efficiency.

Bleed the Radiators

Bleeding a radiator is something easy to stay on top of but is too often dismissed. If the top section of a radiator is cooler than the bottom it’s time to bleed the radiators. This occurs when too much air has entered the radiator overruling the hot water. When the air gets released, the hot water is then able to freely flow around the radiator distributing heat evenly. Doing this regularly will help to avoid cold spots which could tamper with the overall performance.

Blue flame

An easy but essential part of making sure you have got an efficiently running boiler is regularly checking that the blue flame on the front of your boiler is clear and crisp.

Seeing this bright blue flame means you have an energy-efficient running boiler, however, if the flame is showing as orange or yellow, this issue should be considered as a priority. This could indicate there is a fault or a carbon monoxide leak.

The blue flame changing colour could be a sign of the gas-to-air ratio being off in the boiler. Even a small draft could create issues so ensure that the boiler is covered and placed in a draft-free area of the property.
